Daily outdoor displays and produce sales for Lucky's Market got a green light at the City Commission meeting on Tuesday, May 7, as the commission unanimously approved the grocer's special exception request on first reading.
Lucky's Market by design has a garage door in its entrance to the produce department to display produce to customers, according to a city memo, and each store is required to follow the same protocol in using produce bins to ensure a consistent look across the store brand. Lucky's Market was seeking to have four produce bins and a cart corral area in the front entrance of the store.
The feedback from the commission, several of which had attended Lucky's VIP Friends and Family Night on Monday, May 6, was all positive. City Commissioner Dwight Selby was absent; he was away on a business convention.
City Commissioner Troy Kent said that the only thing he is sorry about is that Lucky's is across the street from his zone. He attended the VIP event and said the large crowd showed a true indication of how popular Lucky's will be.
“I think that Lucky’s is lucky to be in Ormond Beach, and I think our residents are extremely lucky to have another option like this," Kent said.
Kent said this type of outdoor exposure is appropriate for the city, and that other businesses like Perrine's Produce and Lowes have received the same special exception.
City Commissioner Susan Persis said she liked the friendly welcome from the employees and that the excitement surrounding the new store was palpable.
"This is like a huge icon for our city, and I'm thrilled," Persis said.
Though City Commissioner Rob Littleton drove to the VIP event, he said he saw people walking to it. This is an example of Lucky's helping to make the downtown more walkable, he said.
Mayor Bill Partington said people were all smiles at the event. He added that it's an upscale shopping experience for residents.
“It’s going to be a perfect fit, and our city is excited to have [Lucky’s] here," Partington said.
