“Frank Scofield was a great man and it was a privilege to work with him," Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood wrote on his Facebook page. "He will never be forgotten. My heart and my prayers are with everyone who knew and loved this one-of-a-kind legend.”
On Sunday, June 2, Senior Deputy Frank Scofield, a 58-year-old resident of Port Orange, was hit and killed while riding his bicycle.
He was taking a ride before attending Sunday church service with his wife, according to Chitwood.
The driver of the 2002 Dodge Van that hit Scofield was Lajos Dezso Toth of Lake Helen, 75. The driver was eastbound on Pioneer Trail as Scofield was coming northbound on County Road 415. The driver failed to stop at the stop sign and traveled into the intersection hitting Scofield on the left side of his bicycle, according to the report.
The crash is still under investigation.
Scofield was a frequent biker, and if there was a cancer benefit or other money to be raised, Frank would gather riders to participate; he was passionate about doing the right thing and making a difference in the community, according to Chitwood.
“The world lost a great man today," wrote The Hub Cycling, on its Facebook page. "We are crushed and our hearts go out to the Scofield family, the Volusia County Sheriffs Department and anyone who was lucky enough to have met Big Frank. Please pray for comfort for his family.”
A celebration of life will be held for Scofield at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 6, at First Baptist Church. The church is located at 118 N. Palmetto Ave. in Daytona Beach.
