The Knights of Columbus Council 8086 recently doubled its annual Coats for Kids program by distributing 468 jackets to students in seven elementary schools in the county, according to a press release.
Eight Knights visited Port Orange schools: Sugar Mill Elementary, Spruce Creek Elementary and Port Orange Elementary; South Daytona Schools: Turie T. Small Elementary and South Daytona Elementary; and Holly Hill School in Holly Hill and West Side Elementary in Daytona Beach. The total contribution for the program was $6,000, a press release states. The funds came from the Council's program, like the Duck Derby.
The Knights who participated in the coat distribution included Tony Manzolillo, Tim Mell, Ted Morrell, Mike DeGuire, Stan Hetrick, Roger Packard, Mike Kliment, Ernie Jackson, John O'Malley, Jacques Roch and Grand Knight Jim Waggoner.
The Florida Academy of Family Physicians recently named Anunporn Srisawat, of Port Orange, as its Exemplary Part-Time Educator of the Year during its Family Medicine Winter Summit meeting held at the Ritz-Carlton Amelia Island earlier this month.
Srisawat, also know by her patients and staff as "Dr. Tui," is a Washington state native who spent most of her childhood in Thailand and California, according to a press release. She graduated from the Loma Linda University School of Medicine in California and completed her residency in family medicine at Florida Hospital Orlando, now known as AdventHealth Orlando.
She started her private practice career in 2011 and serves as a clinical preceptor for Florida State University medical students in geriatrics and chronic care. The Exemplary Part-Time Educator award recognizes "the dedication, expertise and ability to provide the highest quality instruction to physicians in all phases of their medical training and practice in a part-time capacity," according to a press release.
The Knights of Columbus Assembly 2794, along with Council 8086, hosted its second-annual veterans spaghetti dinner on Nov. 9 at the Our Lady of Hope Parish Hall.
The military-style dinner paid tribute to local veterans and those currently in active duty, who joined the 350 parishioners and community members who attended. The event was modeled after a ceremonial tradition in all branches of service called "Dining-Out," according to a press release. Among those in attendance were U.S. Rep. Michael Waltz and retired Army Brig. Gen. Ernie Audino, who is also Waltz's district director.
The tribute began with the traditional bugle "Mess Call," played by parishioner and Spruce Creek High School band member Kaely Beagling. The Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Sr. ROTC Color Guard posted the colors and the national anthem was sung by Knight Joseph Cerio.
Veterans and community members dressed as the cast of MASH for the Council's version of a military punch bowl ceremony, and retired Army Lt. Col. Ernest Jackson performed a "Points of Order" skit poking fun at the inter-service rivalry. Debbie Jackson, Carmel Vaden, Denyse Meyers and John O'Brian also performed "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy."
The Warner Christian Academy elementary choir performed for the residents of Countryside Lakes assisted living facility on Dec. 5.
The choir is comprised of fourth, fifth and sixth grade students under the direction of Derold Harrington, according to an email. The residents enjoyed a Christmas concert, and also spent time visiting with the children.
John DeMarinis, of Port Orange, was recently selected by AdventHealth to serve as the director of supply chain for hospital operations in Flagler, Lake and Volusia counties, according to a press release.
DeMarinis is now responsible for providing leadership and strategic direction for all supply chain functions and focusing on implementing strategies that align with AdventHealth's initiatives. He has 15 years of experience and has held many supply chain roles during his career, the press release states; these include informatics analyst, contract manager, material manager and supply chain director. He recently served as the regional supply chain director for TrinityHealth, a nonprofit Catholic health system from Michigan.
He holds a bachelor's degree in accounting and a master's in business administration.
