Deb Denys will likely continue to represent District 2 of Volusia County, which includes Port Orange, as she leads the polls by 61.1% over local business owner Michael J. Arminio as of 9:30 p.m p.m. on Nov. 6.
Preliminary results showed Arminio behind Denys with 38.9% of the vote.
Arminio thanked his supporters on Facebook as results came in.
"Whatever happens tonight with the results, just remember I gave it my best," he said. "Win or lose, I’m proud how I ran this campaign, issues oriented. And take my hat off to Deb for doing the same."
Moving forward, Denys told the Port Orange Observer in a previous interview that her focuses will be hiring a new county manager, restoring and protecting the Indian River Lagoon and all waters within Volusia County, and keep working for transparent and accountable processes and procedures within the county.
As for other races, Dorothy L. Hukill led with 54.5% of votes for District 14 State Senator.
Hukill died on Oct. 2 after a battle with cancer and the Republican Party tapped New Smyrna Beach business owner Tom Wright on Oct. 11 to run for her seat. Notices posted in each voting booth, vote-by-mail ballots and information boards at each polling locations and early voting sites stated that a vote for Hukill counted as a vote for Wright.
Melissa "Mel" Martin had 45.5% of votes as of Tuesday evening.
Martin thanked her supporters for joining her on her journey in a live Facebook video. She also said she thanked Wright, and she hopes they can work together to address issues that were brought up during the campaign. Martin said she had a touching conversation with Hukill's son, who thanked her for the way she ran her campaign.
She said moving forward she cannot rest. After tomorrow, she said they need to regroup, re-strategize and talk about how they will prepare for the upcoming legislative session and future sessions.
"What comes next is that I will wear flip flops more often, I will advocate for the interests that I've been talking about ... and will continue to do our hardest for making things better for Floridians and our kids," she said.
State Representative Tom Leek also led the polls Tuesday for the State Representative District 25 seat with 59.1% of the vote. Kathleen "Katie" Tripp had 39.2% of the votes, and Joseph "Joe" Hannoush had 1.7% of the votes.
