After dealing with serious injuries resulting from being struck by a car while walking home on the shoulder of Lakeview Boulevard in Palm Coast on March 2, 2017, Liz Taylor, who was Liz Sherman at the time, didn’t know if she’d ever be able to walk again — let alone walk down the aisle at her wedding.
But exactly fifteen months later on Saturday, June 2, she fulfilled her promise to herself to do just that.
“I’m just so happy that I don’t need a cane, I don’t need a brace, I don’t need anything really to assist me,” she said. “So, I’m just really happy because I was so worried that I was going to. I think that’s what drove me actually to walk because I was determined to not need anything when I walked down the aisle.”
With her family and friends as witnesses, Liz walked down the aisle at Parkview Baptist Church with her father Fred Sherman by her side to meet William Taylor at the stage.
“You are special and unique,” William Taylor said in his vows to Liz. “I know God put us together, so that’s why this marriage is going to work.”
The journey to get to this day was a challenging one, but Liz said William was hands-on and supportive of her physical therapy sessions three times a week.
“He’s been excellent. He’s been really great — working full-time and dropping me off every time he can and coming and watching,” Liz Taylor said. “He learned how to do the massages and stuff on my neck to help my neck pain. He’s always been there for me. He's really great.”
After each hour- or hour-and-a-half long physical therapy session, Liz grew stronger.
“I was in physical therapy for a year,” she said. “I scheduled extra appointments ... I knew that I needed physical therapy, and I never gave up. I quickly progressed from a walker to a cane to not needing anything.”
At the end of March this year, she finally knew she’d be able to walk without any assistance.
“She’s very determined and hardworking, so we knew she would reach the goals she wanted to,” said Shani Sherman, Liz’s mother.
After the ceremony, the newlyweds headed off to a six-night honeymoon in the Florida Keys to celebrate their marriage.
