Christian author Georgia Duncan held a storytime at Swilerbees Craft Donuts & Coffee in Flagler Beach on Aug. 4.
Duncan, a native of Mississippi, has lived in Palm Coast since 2020 with her husband Benjamin and children, Calleigh, 17, and Harper, 13. She published her first children’s book, "Before You Were Born," in 2022.
This year, two additional faith-based children’s books by Duncan were released, "Baby Baby, Now That You’re Here," and "Father, Father, I Am Listening."
Duncan is an active member of New Way Church in Palm Coast, where she serves on the worship team.
Celebrate Women’s Equality Day on Aug. 26, with the Flagler Branch of the American Association of University Women for a free presentation of “How Women Won The Vote.”
The program will be held at the Bunnell Library @ Nexus at 3 p.m. commemorating the 1920 certification of the 19th Amendment which granted American women the right to vote.
Learn about the decades of activism by nationally known leaders like Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton as well as local suffragist Alice Scott Abbott.
Flagler County’s Veterans Services Office is asking for nominations for its “Colonel Gary E. DeKay” Veteran of the Year Award, which will be presented on Veterans Day.
The award will be presented to a living Flagler County veteran who has not only served in the United States military with honor but has used the leadership skills and abilities learned in military service to improve the Flagler County community through selfless volunteer service.
“We have more than 13,000 veterans in Flagler County, and they have done so much for all of us,” Veterans Services Officer David Lydon said. “This award gives us an opportunity to say thank you as a community.”
Nominations will be accepted now through Sept. 30. The Flagler County Veterans Advisory Council commissions a panel of veterans and community leaders to review and select the Veteran of the Year from the eligible candidates.
The criteria for volunteer service may be for single act or for continuous service. The award's recipient may not be a previous winner. Nominations must be postmarked no later than Sept. 30 and may not exceed three typewritten pages. The nomination must include a resume of no more than two pages with a minimum font size of 11 points that includes: period(s) of military service and branch of one of the six Armed Services or U.S. Merchant Marine; military awards and decorations; membership in nationally recognized veterans’ organizations; community and/or civic organization memberships; community and/or civic organization awards or special recognition; nominees’ addresses, telephone numbers, and email addresses if available.
A one-page typewritten nomination statement of no more than 250 words that describes why the individual should be selected as the Flagler County Veteran of the Year should be provided along with the resume. Proof of military services is also required through either a DD214 or verification by a nationally recognized veteran’s organization.
