The old Food Lion building will once again be a bustling center for produce, as Lucky's Market will set up shop in next 18-24 months.
Located at 101 E. Granada Blvd., the building has been vacant for almost six years since it was closed by Food Lion. The city's former economic development director, Joe Mannarino, had been working with Lucky's for the past three years in identifying a location in Ormond Beach. Current Economic Development Director Brian Rademacher said this isn't uncommon.
"I think it's a good win for the city of Ormond," Rademacher said. "It's a good win for Volusia County because they bring a nice niche to the grocery sector, which is also an industry sector that is really growing, and so I think they're going to bring a nice flavor to the beachside as well as the downtown."
He will be presenting the economic plan before the City Commission at the meeting on Wednesday, Aug. 8. He said it's exciting to become part of this initiative, coined Project Simba by Mannarino.
"It's no surprise that this is happening, because I think Ormond Beach provides companies what they're looking for," Rademacher said.
Some of the members of the Ormond Beach City Commission also had positive things to say about the upcoming redevelopment project.
"What a wonderful opportunity Ormond Beach truly has," said City Commissioner Troy Kent during the City Commission on Tuesday, July 31.
Mayor Bill Partington said that he's equally thrilled about the news and that seeing the vacant beachside building finally have quality grocer on board is a positive thing for the community.
“The excitement in the community about this is palpable," Partington said. "There's been a huge response. People are looking forward to it."
