Senator Dorothy Hukill’s bill allowing state legislators to visit schools in their local districts passed its final Senate Committee with unanimous support. The bill now heads to the Senate floor.

Senator Hukill’s legislation, SB 118, would allow elected officials to meet with their youngest constituents, and the teachers guiding them, in their district schools. The bill, titled Visitation of Schools by legislators, allows for local representatives to listen to concerns, answer questions and see what challenges teachers face daily.

Visitation to schools will also provide the opportunity for teachers, counselors, administrators and staff to communicate personally with their representatives.

“Children are the future of our state and teachers are the ones leading them. As elected officials, it is critical for us to build relationships and trust with the community we serve,” Hukill said. “During my time in office, I’ve had the pleasure of visiting with many school children and teachers in my office. The opportunity to be able to visit them, and see the amazing work they do in our schools, would be both gratifying and beneficial.”
