Shianne Buckmaster, a Creekside Middle School student, was selected as the 2018 winner of the Art in the Capitol Competition.

The seventh-grader's art, titled "Hear me Roar," will be put on display at the Capitol in Tallahassee during the legislative session, beginning on Tuesday, January 9 and ending on Friday, March 9.  The winning art piece will be returned after the end of session.

For Buckmaster, the announcement that she had won came as a surprise. She that while she sketches "all the time" she hadn't had any plans for the oil pastel artwork, which took about about a week and three days to complete.

"It was ... not comprehendible," Buckmaster said, adding, "I didn't think something like this would happen because I can't plan these things."

The Art in the Capitol Competition, approved during the 2016 Legislative Session, is an annual statewide visual arts contests for public, private and homeschooled students in grades 6 through 8 with art teachers acting as judges.

Winning submissions are sent to a legislator of the legislative district in which the student resides no later than 60 days before the start of each regular legislative session.

Buckmaster's submission was presented to Senator Dorothy Hukill.

“I have always been a strong supporter of the arts and this competition allows students to showcase their passion for the arts and to share that passion with all who visit our capitol,” Hukill said in a press release.  “I extend my sincerest congratulations to Shianne Buckmaster for her beautifully detailed art piece that was selected to be displayed during session.”

Winning submissions will be displayed throughout the lower level of the Florida State Capitol.
