Port Orange residents and Halifax Health registered nurses Richard Forquer and Monika Glisson were recently named the winners of the community health system’s November 2017 DAISY Award, which recognizes nurses who go above and beyond.

The awards are part of the DAISY Foundation, which was established by the family of J. Patrick Barnes, who died of an auto-immune disease at age 33.

The patient who nominated Forquer for the award wrote that he "provided me with not only the most knowledgeable care but he was very reassuring and showed me great compassion. He came to my room just to say hello and check on my wellbeing."

The patient, who has been a registered nurse for 20 years, had been sick for 10 years, which led to multiple hospitalizations.

"I have never received such amazing care," the patient wrote. "Halifax Health is very lucky to have a great employee like Rick.”

Forquer, a 2012 graduate of Daytona State College’s nursing program, is currently studying to receive a Bachelor of Science in nursing. He has worked in Halifax Health’s cardiac intermediate care unit for two years prior to joining Halifax Health Medical Center of Port Orange’s intensive care unit in March 2017.

Glisson, who has worked at Halifax Health since September 2002, attended nursing school in Hungary. Glisson's interest in the medical field started at an early age: When she was young, she would play doctor and pretend to give her dolls shots.

The brother of the patient who nominated Glisson for the DAISY Award described her as hospitable and energetic, adding that "she was a bright spot at a very stressful time. Care to the family is part of the care to the patient.”
