Port Orange resident, Bob Davis, reappointed to Daytona State College District Board of Trustees

Governor Rick Scott has announced two reappointments to the District Board of Trustees of Daytona State College.

Bob Davis, 80, of Port Orange, is the President of the Halifax Lodging & Hospitality Association. He previously served as the chairman of the Civil Service Board for the city of Daytona Beach Shores. Davis has been reappointed for a term beginning Oct. 11, 2017, and ending on May 31, 2021.

Mary Ann Haas, 65, of Flagler Beach, is a retired district curriculum director of the Flagler County School District. She received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Central Florida and is reappointed for a term beginning Oct. 11, 2017, and ending May 31, 2021.

The appointments are subject to confirmation by the Florida Senate.

Pearls of Hope Gala put on to fight homelessness

Food Brings Hope hosted its annual Pearls of Hope Gala to benefit the initiative of ending homelessness among Volusia County students. 

The event took place on Friday, Oct. 13 at the Jim Henderson Welcome Center at Embry Riddle Aeronautical University. 

According to organization officials, the event raises hundreds of thousands of dollars, which to toward youth throughout the county. 

 The 2016 Gala raised more than $180,000 to benefit programs and initiatives "designed to break the cycle of hunger, poverty, and homelessness among students in our communities," according to the Food Brings Hope website. 

Sheriff Chitwood to discuss safety with students

Students at The Global Montessori School of Ormond will be getting a special lesson on safety thanks to the Volusia County Sheriff's Department. 

At 9 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 23, Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood will help educate students about being safe in their community. Chitwood is expected to talk about what is happening in the community and the different safety needs children should be aware of when they are out. 

According to school officials, this talk is part of the school's curriculum.
