Based on her accomplishments as a local doctor and pioneer work to raise awareness about the opioid crisis in the area, Dr. Pamela Carbiener was named the 2017 Citizen of the Year during the Citizens for Ormond Beach's membership dinner on Wednesday, Oct. 11, at the Ormond Beach Performing Arts Center.

She was presented the award by Dee Boehm, wife of City Commissioner Rick Boehm. Dee Boehm said Carbiener saved their daughter Krista's life two months ago when she suffered from a rare illness. She described Carbiener as an intelligent, confident, selfless and passionate woman.

“She doesn’t worry about getting paid," Dee Boehm said. "She doesn’t worry about what people in the medical community, or community at large, think of her. She’s non-judgmental and she’s respectful of all of her patients.”

After completing her residency at Georgetown University, Carbiener has been locally practicing obstetrics and gynecology for about 25 years. She currently works at Halifax Health.

Dee Boehm said Carbiener was instrumental in successfully advocating for a regional Florida State University medical campus in Daytona as well as began dealing with the effects of opioid addiction in babies and expectant mothers long before congress took notice of the epidemic, which is a cause Carbiener is passionate about.

“I think that this is something that we as grassroots individuals are going to be able to assess and correct and see our community whole again," Carbiener said.

She is also in charge of organizing the annual Daytona Blues Festival, which raises money for Halifax Health's neonatal intensive care unit.

Krista Boehm, 29, has been seeing Carbiener for 13 years. When she first approached her about her illness, Krista Boehm said Carbiener treated her like no other doctor would have, with a lot of one-on-one attention — even bringing her donuts one day while she was asleep in her hospital bed. Right from the start, Carbiener took her illness seriously and got to work finding the best way to treat her.

“She knows I’m not one to exaggerate,” Krista Boehm said.

After three weeks in the hospital, Krista Boehm was able to go home. She thanks Carbiener for all that she did, and said she was not just a good doctor, but a good person.

“Our daughter Krista and many others in our community are here, and they are doing well due to our 2017 citizen of the year, Dr. Pamela Carbiener," Dee Boehm said.
