One of Florida's largest largest public safety job fairs comes to Volusia County

Plus, a poetry Halloween event, new ArtHaus classes and a special movie screening for Biketoberfest.

Daytona State College’s School of Emergency Services will host one of Florida’s largest public safety job fairs on Friday, Nov. 3, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., at DSC’s Advanced Technology College.

The event will have recruiters representing more 50 agencies, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation and other law enforcement, corrections, firefighting, emergency medical services, EVAC units and more.

Current students, graduates and anyone interested in pursuing a career in public safety are welcome to attend. Job seekers are asked to bring resumes, be "dressed for success" and ready to discuss their work history, education or military service.

Participating organizations include police and sheriff’s departments from across the state, as well as the Volusia County corrections, animal services, beach safety, communications, emergency management and human resources departments.

Additionally, recruiters from the state’s Office of Agricultural Law Enforcement, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the Florida Highway Patrol, Sunstar Paramedics, the Stewart Marchman Act-Rape Crisis Center, and the U.S. Army and Navy are expected to attend.

DSC’s Career Services Department also will be on hand to help students and graduates with their career exploration and job placement. DSC admissions staff will be able to answer questions regarding the college’s School of Emergency Services programs.

Cinematique Welcomes Bikers with a Special Biketoberfest Screening of "The World’s Fastest Indian"

The Cinematique Theater will host a special one-time screening of "The World’s Fastest Indian," starring Academy Award Winner Anthony Hopkins, at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 21. 

The World’s Fastest Indian tells the story of New Zealander Burt Munro, who spent years rebuilding a 1920 Indian motorcycle, which helped him set the land speed world record at Utah’s Bonneville Salt Flats in 1967.

Due to limited seating and high demand, reservations are suggested. Tickets are $7 for general admission and $5 for members.

ArtHaus offering a variety of art classes geared toward children

Several art classes for children are being offered at ArtHaus during October.

“Adventures in Art!” will be taught on Tuesdays by Art educator Marla Basli for children five years and up from 3:30 p.m. to - 5 pm. Students will be able to create many forms of art during the four art classes to be held October 3, 10, 17 and 24. The cost is $80 with art supplies included.

Christophe Cardot will teach his children’s painting classes on three Wednesdays from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. for ages eight years and up. Students will learn how to mix colors and develop original paintings.

The three classes, along with art supplies, will cost $60 and will be held on October 4, 18 and 25.

The “Art of Drawing” classes taught by Monique Fisher will help children develop their drawing skills. The classes take place on Thursdays, October 5, 12, 19 and 26. The four classes are scheduled from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. and the fee is $60, which includes art supplies.

Music and poetry coming to local Halloween party 

The Creative Happiness Institute and Thank You Five Theater are joining together for Halloween entertainment that will include Michael Bates and his band, and poetry-slam performer Curtis X Meyer, hosted by Scott Velazco and David B.

The event will go from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 28. 

Audience members can come in costume while a cash prize of $50 will be given for the best performance at the open mic or costume. All poetry and musical styles are welcome.

Bates, a DeLand native, has been in the Central Florida music scene for the past six years. His original music includes the genres of folk, blues, jazz and funk. His band mates are Casey Lerman and David Osorio.
