It didn’t take long for first-year head coach Travis Roland to excite his new football community by beating the Seabreeze Sandcrabs 27-6 in the spring game on Friday, May 19, at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex.
Roland, a former defensive coordinator for Mainland, took over the Bulldogs program in January. While commanding the entire team, Roland runs the defense, and, after two quarters of play against the Sandcrabs, he expressed to me that he really liked that side of the ball.
By halftime, Roland’s defense had caught two interceptions (Ryan Dean and Isaiah Stubbs) and forced and recovered a fumble, along with sacking the quarterback on multiple plays.
The Bulldogs may have also found a ton of offense, starting with their freshman quarterback, Donovan Montoyo, who led three touchdown drives, including his eight-yard touchdown passes to Anfernee Brown, a 57-yard touchdown score on a quarterback keeper. Brown also caught a 20-yard score from Ryan Freeman, and Jimmie Robinson scored the other touchdown on a 16-yard run,
Based on the spring game, the Bulldogs have a lot to look forward to come fall football season.
