Members of the newly chartered Rotary Club of Downtown Ormond Beach gathered together June 1 at Oceanside Country Club to celebrate the milestone.

President Joyce Pepin belonged to a rotary club in Daytona Beach and often wondered why she couldn't do those projects in her own town.

"I did enjoy my club," she said, "but I would always be thinking, 'We should be doing this in Ormond Beach.'"

Pepin was unable to join the Rotary Club of Ormond Beach because it's currently not open to new members. So about a year ago, she set on a mission to create her own. Now with a charter and 25 dedicated members under her belt, she's ready to give back to her city.

"I knew there were a lot of people here who want to serve the community," she said. "I knew there were people who felt the same as I did."

Over 100 people attended the inaugural installation meeting for the Rotary Club of Downtown Ormond Beach, which is sponsored by the Ormond Beach Rotary Club. The club is by invitation only, but anyone interested in joining can email [email protected]
