Ormond Beach Mayor Bill Partington and Commissioner Rob Littleton recently met with members of Knights of Columbus Prince of Peace Council 8791 to help kick-off this year’s Knights of Columbus Citizens with Disabilities Tootsie Roll Drive.

The six-week long Tootsie Roll Campaign begins on Feb. 3. It is the Knights’ largest fundraising activity, with the proceeds going to schools and organizations that help developmentally challenged adults and children. Most of the money is distributed locally, but some goes to a statewide Knights’ fund to help adults with disabilities who live and work on their own in non-institutional settings.

Over the past five years, Council 8971 has awarded approximately $18,000 to the special education programs at five Ormond Beach schools, The ARC of Volusia and Florida KoC Charities.

“Through the efforts of our council members and the generosity of area residents and visitors, we look forward again this year to be able to raise much-needed funds to help local students and adults with physical and learning disabilities,” said Michael Ernst, Grand Knight of Council 8791. Ernst added, “We would also like to thank Publix, Walmart and Winn-Dixie for giving us access to their storefronts.”

Prince of Peace Council 8791 was chartered in 1984 and has 210 members.
