The City of Port Orange will soon be making changes to pickups for recycling in Waters Edge and large waste piles throughout the city. Both changes will be taking place on Wednesday, Aug. 23.

Large Waste

Throughout Port Orange, residents with large yard waste piles that require special handling will be picked up according to five zones. Large waste piles that can't be picked up by hand will be handled by zone each week. Regular yard waste collections will continue each Wednesday.

Mick Neals, Port Orange solid waste manager, said the city has two cherry picker trucks that will go out and pick up the waste on designated days for the zones. Neals said the change will not only help residents keep track of pickup days but will also help the drivers as they will only have to service a portion of the city each day instead of driving everywhere in the city to reach each location.

"They're driving back and forth and around and around and it's just not efficient," Neals said, adding that when it comes to residents, his department "can now be more specific when letting them know when it is picked up as well."

Neals said if a residents asks about pickups, they currently tell the individual they will be put on a list and the waste will be picked up by the end of the week.

Recycling

Port Orange residents in Waters Edge will have a slight change to the recycling. Recycling will now be picked up on Wednesday instead of Tuesday.

Neals said the switch is to allow the employees picking up recycling to more efficiently service the growth in the area off of Town West Boulevard.

"Waters Edge, it's such a large community, there's over 1,200 homes in there," Neals said. "It takes a good portion of the day for the guys to get that finished."

Neals said if workers can stay in that area where there will be more growth they will be able to complete the whole area on the same day. Neals said the growth is coming from residential areas such as the Hawks Preserve and Port Orange Plantation communities in addition to the Westport subdivision off of Town West Boulevard.

"The main reason for both of the changes is to be able to accommodate and be convenient for the residents and with the growth in Port Orange and the new neighborhoods that are going in," Neals said.
