The Jerry Doliner Food Bank in Ormond Beach is asking for donations to provide Thanksgiving turkeys to needy families in Volusia and Flagler counties.

The food bank will give 15-pound turkeys, side dishes and pumpkin pies to 450 families. Donations of even $15 are enough to buy one turkey.

"Thanksgiving is one holiday where people will cross the continent to have a hearty meal with their families, even more than on Christmas," said Gloria Max, executive director of the Jewish Federation of Volusia and Flagler Counties, which operates the food bank. "I could have given out a thousand turkeys last year, but I didn’t have the money."

Max said the demand for holiday meals is even greater this year because so many families suffered financially due to Hurricane Matthew — not getting paid when their employers were closed and losing all the food in their refrigerators and freezers.

The food bank has received matching funds that will help it reach its $10,000 goal to provide turkeys, side dishes and other food for the Thanksgiving meals, Max said.

The Jerry Doliner Food Bank helps people regardless of religion, race or ethnicity, and 98%of the people receiving aid are not Jewish. One hundred percent of donations go to providing food because all administrative costs are paid by the Jewish Federation.
