Ormond-By-The-Sea Lions give blood screens at Halifax Urban Ministries

Diabetic retinopathy is one of the leading causes of new adult blindness in America.

Five members of the Ormond-By-The-Sea Lions Club conducted both diabetic retinopathy screenings and blood glucose screenings at the Halifax Urban Ministries Homeless shelters with the Lions International President Chancellor Lion Robert Corlew from Tennessee.

Corlew was invited to visit the district by past District Governor Lion Dr. Norma Callahan of the Volusia County Lions Club to learn about diabetic retinopathy screening. Dr. Callahan secured a Sight First Grant to purchase screening cameras to conduct the screenings for people who are in high-risk categories for diabetic retinopathy, one of the leading causes of new adult blindness in America.

The Lions program detects this disease as well as many cases of macular degeneration and other retinal disorders. Lions Clubs have conducted over 2,500 diabetic retinopathy screenings and over 10,000 blood sugar screenings free of charge.

At HUM, 30 blood glucose screenings and 30 diabetic retinopathy screenings were completed.
