Residents have opportunity to honor a vet they know

Area residents can add their own favorite veteran to the Veterans Museum and Education Center, located in City Hall.

Amid the uniforms, medals and other memorabilia, The “Veteran of the Month” display has a photo of an actual veteran and tells about their service.

“It’s another way to honor them,” said John Brinkley, founder and president of the center. He is seeking people who want to honor a veteran in this way and asks that they call him to make arrangements.

The 16x20-inch showcase contains a photo and any available information, such as service record, assignments, deployment, experiences, etc. The current display also has photos in a glass case, because several were available. Brinkley said this could be done for any veteran.

There’s been a good mix of veterans of the month so far, he said, from World War II to recent conflicts in Iraq.

“They don’t have to be a hero,” he said.

He can help get the material for the showcase typed up, if necessary. “Some people bring it in pretty raw,” he said.

The Veterans Museum and Education Center is a nonprofit group that meets monthly at the library. Members speak at various events.

“We have a real interesting group,” he said. “There’s a three-star general, Army colonel, Navy captain, Air Force colonel. Of course you can’t fight a war with just officers. We have a lot of enlisted men.”

The Veteran of the Month display has been in operation for 13 months. Brinkley said he needs more nominations so can they have a veteran for every month.

The center has been in City Hall for 16 months, but Brinkley continues to look for a larger venue. He said even if it moves, he will retain a small exhibit there, because city officials have said it’s been a nice addition to the lobby, just outside City Commission chambers and across from the staircase.

Call Brinkley at 677-7416.
