Alan Burton, of Ormond Beach, has announced he is running for Volusia County Property Appraiser.

“As Volusia County Property Appraiser, the appraiser’s department shall set industry standards for professionalism, integrity and high customer service for all property owners,” he said in a statement.

Currently, Burton appraises property for Forsythe Appraisals LLC. Previously, he was owner of Burton + Partners LLC. He has served on the Volusia Soil and Water Conservation District since 2008.

Burton is president of the Kiwanis Club of Ormond Beach and the Ormond Beach Performing Arts Center, Friends Inc.

Work with horses recognized

Karen Grant, of Ormond Beach, children’s program developer for the children’s grief center for Halifax Health-Hospice, recently received the 2015 Award of Excellence – Community Outreach for Program Innovation

Grant received the award for her development of the Hearts and Hooves retreat program presented by the BeginAgain Children’s Grief Center.

A retreat for families, young children and teens Hearts and Hooves offers trained grief counselors who guide participants through artistic activities and allow them healing interaction with horses.

Grant is a certified equine psychotherapist; licensed clinical social worker and certified grief therapist.

House damaged in fire

At approximately 7:20 p.m. on June 10, the Ormond Beach Fire Department was dispatched to a residential structure fire at 84 North Arbor Drive. The fire appears to have been accidental, starting in the garage and spreading to the attic and house, according to a spokeswoman. There were no injuries.

The Red Cross has been contacted to assist the family. Damages are estimated at approximately $80,000.

The fire department was assisted by Holly Hill Fire Department, Volusia County Fire Services and Volusia County EMS.
