"The NED" band before taking the oath to go bald in support of breast cancer awareness at the Flagler Board Shake on Saturday, Dec. 5.

“We have gone from NED heads to skin heads,” Evi Menshchikova said, as she admired her new appearance. Evi selflessly volunteered to shave her head along with five others in support of one local woman, Michelle Lynn George, who was recently diagnosed with stage-three breast cancer. Michelle is the mother to lead guitarist and vocalist, Trace George, of local band “The NED.” Within minutes loose hair from the band and their friends covered the patio outside of the Flagler Board Shack on Saturday, Dec. 5, in support of Michelle and breast cancer awareness.
“We didn’t expect anyone besides the band to shave their heads today,” Band Manager Justyn Perry said.
“Honestly, I did not plan on shaving my head,” Connor O’Brien said in return. “I have known these guys since sophomore year of high school, so I am happy to support Trace’s mom.”
Hair stylist Celia Whitefield, of New Beginnings Salon & Spa, donated her time and expertise to shave the supporter’s heads.
For the George family, breast cancer is not uncommon. “We lost my aunt last year to breast cancer, so we knew it was a possibility my mother would also be effected,” Trace George said. “Through shaving our heads we hope to raise breast cancer awareness and to show her our support; let her know she is not going through this alone. The most important thing I can do is to give her a hug, comfort her and tell her I love her.”
“At first the chemo made some of my hair fall out, so I ended up getting a pixie-cut,” Michelle said. “But then on Thanksgiving Day all my hair started to fall out in clumps, which as a woman, is never easy to go through.”
Michelle will undergo six chemotherapy treatments to rid her body of the cancer. “These kids took it upon themselves to support me through this hardship, and for that I am forever grateful,” Michelle said, while fighting back tears. “This is my journey and I am blessed to have my boys to help me through it.”
