When Brian Furber first decided he wanted to throw a community Christmas party for charity, he picked the widely popular Toys for Tots to be the recipient. However once he heard about a local family who lost their father and home to a fire, he decided the change directions.

Furber's Auto Sales' Community Appreciation Event raised $6,000 total for the Clayton family, who recently lost everything — including their father, Kevin Clayton, — during a fire at their Flagler Beach home. Though Amy Clayton, who works as an assistant at Realty Pros Assured in Ormond Beach, isn't a friend of Furbers, he said he's only heard nice things about her.

"My best friend knows her, and so do a lot of people in the community," Furber said. "Nobody has anything bad to say."

The over 70 participants who attended the event brought gift cards for the family and wrapped gifts to put under their Christmas tree. Furber matched anyone who brought cash donations — a total of $1,600.

"I couldn't imagine being in her shoes," he said. "I was raised in a small down, and this is just what you do. You have a duty and an obligation to do what you can."
