Cookin' up some crime

12:08 p.m. First block of Wheaton Lane. Attempted burglary.
A man saw two men drive a truck into a local backyard, grab a grill, and start loading it into the truck.

He walked over and asked them if they had the homeowner’s permission. They said they did, but the man called the homeowner, and she said she hadn’t given anyone the go-ahead to run off with her grill.

The two men put the grill back, but before they did, the driver told the man his name. He noted down their license plate and called the Sheriff’s Office.

A deputy tracked the vehicle to its owner’s home, but the owner didn’t match the witness’ description of the driver.

The deputy who wrote the incident report about the crime wasn’t sure if the witness got the plate number wrong, or if someone else had been driving the truck.

Tag, you’re it

9:17 a.m. First block of Town Center Boulevard. Larceny.
A woman staying at a local hotel parked her rental car it the hotel’s lot Thursday night, then walked out to the car at about 8:30 a.m. Friday morning and noticed the license plate was gone.

She called the rental car company, then the Sheriff’s Office.

A deputy asked a hotel employee if there was surveillance video of the lot. There was, but the camera didn’t cover the area where the woman had parked. The deputy gave her a case card and entered the tag number into a crime database as stolen.

Finders shall not be keepers

3:51 p.m. 300 block of Cypress Edge Drive. Larceny.
A man opened a charge account at the service desk of a local hardware store, then walked off to shop, leaving his wallet on the counter.

When he realized he’d forgotten it, he went back to the service desk, and it was gone, according to a Sheriff’s Office report.

The man spoke to store staff members, who checked the store’s surveillance video.
The video showed a man wearing a blue plaid shirt and black pants walk up to the counter, notice the wallet, look around, then slide the wallet into his pocket.

The thief then walked over a woman checking out of the store, and they walked out together.

The victim canceled his credit cards and called the Sheriff’s Office.

A deputy watched the video and used the store’s credit card transaction information to get the name of the woman the thief left the store with.

He contacted her, and she said she’d been at the store with her son, and that she’d dropped him off at his house, according to the report.

When the deputy went there, the son answered the door wearing a blue plain shirt and black pants. He looked like the man in the video, according to the report.

The deputy asked him if anything had happened at the hardware store while he was there.

The man said he’d found a wallet.

He handed it to the deputy, and it had the victim’s driver’s license and credit cards in it..

The deputy asked the man why he hadn’t turned it in or called law enforcement, and the man could not give a “reasonable explanation,” according to the report.

The deputy arrested the man and returned the wallet to its owner. Nothing was missing. The wallet contained just $2 cash.
