Hundreds of walkers help multiple sclerosis event raise $20,000

The Ormond Beach MS Walk brought in more than 250 participants.

More feet than usual hit the pavement on the Halifax River Bridge this weekend, as people from all over Florida came to participate in Walk MS.

Hosted by the National MS Society Mid-Florida Chapter, supporters in the fight for a cure strode up and down the bridge to raise money for multiple sclerosis research. Heather Carelli, manager for the chapter, said the walk is estimated to bring in close to $20,000. She said the event brought in about 250 participants.

“Events like this bring the community together,” Carelli, who got involved with the organization because her dad has had MS for 18 years, said. “It educates people on what multiple sclerosis is and gives them a good time to celebrate with their family and friends, as well as raise money for critical MS research.”

The Webb family drove three hours from Port St. Lucie to walk for their cousin, who has MS.

“This is our first (MS Walk),” Lauren Webb said. “I usually do the breast cancer and the diabetes walks, but we wanted to get involved a little more. Plus, we’ve always wanted to check out this area.”
