The Flagler County Chamber of Commerce welcomed its first Youth Leadership Flagler class by hosting a dinner and kickoff reception May 21, at Woody’s Bar-B-Q.

Ten current high school sophomores were selected to participate in the one-day-a-month program, which will begin in September 2013 and end in April 2014. Congratulations to the members of Youth Leadership Flagler’s inaugural class:

From Matanzas High School: William Conville, Brianna Doonan, Michael Manning, Haley McQueen and Stefano Schibeci; from Flagler Palm Coast High School: Cara Jestes, Elizabeth Morris, Diana Nguyen and Margaret Reed: from iFlagler Virtual: Sabrina Renaldi.

According to Chamber President Rebecca DeLorenzo, the reception to the new program has been extremely positive.

“Considering this is our inaugural class, we were thrilled so many 10th-graders applied,” she said. “The program has the potential to positively impact students who are already interested in learning more about their community and becoming stewards of positive change. We hope Youth Leadership Flagler will empower and inspire these kids to do great things.”

Youth Leadership Flagler would not be possible without the support of a growing group of local sponsors, including The Prosperity Bank Foundation, J Birney Financial, Craig-Flagler Palms Funeral Home & Memorial Gardens, Gail Wadsworth, Landcare Management Inc., Preferred Management Services and WNZF. Leadership Flagler

The youth program is modeled after Leadership Flagler, a three-month program that nurtures and engages the leadership skills of potential and current community leaders. Leadership Flagler has been a community fixture for 21 years.

Ten to 15 candidates are selected each year through a competitive process. Tuition for each participant is $500 for chamber members, and $700 for future members. For more, call Christine Gardner at 437-0106.
