It's amazing what a fresh coat of paint can do.

Flagler Volunteer Services teamed with the city of Bunnell Saturday, March 16, in continuance of the Bunnell beautification process. Volunteers spent Saturday morning painting Willie Mitchell’s State Street home and de-cluttering the back yard.

“These are beautiful people,” Mitchell said as he stood in his backyard, fighting back tears. “I think they’re doing a great job for the community. It’s good to know that we have some beautiful people left in this world.”

Mitchell, who has lived in his house since 2000, called having his house painted a blessing. That blessing came from a BEST Neighborhood Program grant, and is part of a larger beautification effort based around Bunnell’s centennial.

Bunnell Neighborhood Improvement Ambassador Gary Harris said that as the center of the county, Bunnell is trying to encourage residents to keep things cleaned up and make Bunnell more attractive. In addition to Mitchell’s house, several other houses have been chosen to be painted along the main corridors of Bunnell, on State Street, Moody Boulevard and Drain Street, which runs next to the Carver Community Center.

“We are trying to fix up main areas first and, as money and time permit, we will keep progressing,” Harris said.

Two more houses will be painted April 13, on Drain Street. To volunteer, contact Flagler Volunteer Services at 597-2950 or the city of Bunnell at 437-7500.
