ART EDITION: Locals break ground on new Daytona museum; new exhibit coming to Ormond Memorial Museum; and sold-out crowds expected at Art in the Park.

Ground broken for $13 million museum addition

Ormond Beach residents Cici and Hyatt Brown broke ground on their $13 million Museum of Arts & Sciences addition last week, April 15, through Ormond Beach building firm BOMAR Construction. The building, along Nova Road, will add 26,000 square feet of space to house the Brown’s collection of more than 2,600 Florida oil and watercolor paintings.

The museum will also include six smaller, changing galleries, conference rooms, a café and gift shop.

New Memorial Art exhibit: May 4

The Ormond Memorial Art Museum, at 78 E. Granada Blvd., will open an exhibit from Sarasota artists Clive and Jane Perez King May 4, called “Illuminated Journeys.”

Primarily a graphite artist, Clive King recently transitioned to ink. He is currently working on an “optimistic and intuitive abstract” piece about a 1996 landslide in Aberfan, near his hometown, which killed 116 junior high children and 28 adults.

Jane Perez King focuses on larger arcs, designed to bring the viewer in.

The museum is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, and noon to 4 p.m. weekends.

Art in the Park: Sold out!

Ormond Beach’s 41st-annual Art in the Park will be 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, May 4 and 5, at Rockefeller Gardens, and already it touts a sold-out crowd.

Art and crafts will be judged, with a best in show fine arts prize of $1,500 to be awarded. The winning piece will also be displayed at the Ormond Memorial Art Museum. Eight other pieces will be recognized, with cash prizes given to the top four.

The event will also feature a free kids’ craft zone, a caricature artist, live music, food and shopping booths. Last year’s event attracted thousands.The Ormond Beach Observer is one of the sponsors of this event.
