Whether in a small business or a poker game, a helping hand is a good thing. And the Young Professionals Group of Flagler County brought the two together with its first charity poker tournament Sept. 28, at Woody's Bar-B-Q.

There were no cash winnings. At stake were two nights at the Georgian Inn Beach Club, in Ormond Beach. Seats at the table were available for a $100 donation, with all proceeds benefiting SCALE, or Small Company Assistance Loan Enterprise. The program is just getting off the ground, according to YPG Chairman Wes Germano.

“We’re hoping to provide microloans to small businesses in the area … on a handshake,” he said. Other than a commitment to receive free business consulting from SCORE or the Business Assistance Center, “There’s no collateral,” he added.

Details are still being worked out, but anyone who wants to donate to the effort can call Germano at 986-8880, or call the Flagler County Chamber of Commerce & Affiliates at 437-0106.

The poker event was a great success, Germano said. “Everybody seemed to have a really good time. We’re thinking about making it a quarterly event.”

Marvin Mullins, co-owner of Vale Professionals, won the victor’s trophy.
