Palm Coast photographers Charlie Badalati and Ed Siarkowicz have had individual art shows at Ocean Books & Art, but this is the first time they have teamed together to showcase the unique character and beauty of Flagler County’s barrier island as seen through their respective cameras.

Gallery owner Frank Gromling paired the two artists to blend their unique styles in an art event to feature the island that draws thousands to Flagler County every year. Gromling, a noted conservationist and award-winning book publisher, wanted to introduce the varied natural, architectural and ecological aspects of life on the island to the broadest audience possible. He believes “Island Style” accomplishes that objective.

Badalati’s black-and-white photographs evoke a feeling of old Florida, that time and place of memories, and yearnings for a quieter time.

“I know the modern Flagler Beach area has a history going back to the early part of the last century," Badalati said. "I wanted to recreate a look and feel of that era for what is here today.

"I think Flagler Beach is a model that beach communities should strive to build towards. It has been developed in a way that keeps the old time feeling alive which puts me at ease. This series of pictures tries to evoke that old time peaceful easy feeling. I hope it finds its mark.”

Siakowicz’s colorful images capture glimpses of modern day life, with a sense of spirituality that beckons one to take time to step back to enjoy the moment. When asked about his work, Siarkowicz said his motivation behind the photographs in the Island Style collection was to arrive at these places and points in time and have my shutter finger ready.

The artists’ work will fill all three galleries at Ocean Books & Art, creating a juxtaposition that presents a depth of beauty not easily found elsewhere.

“Island Style” art opening reception will be from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 9, and is open to the public. Refreshments will be served. The collection will be on display through Jan. 5.
