Raising their hands and their voices, more than 100 girls packed in between the pews and the altar Saturday, July 14, at Mount Calvary Baptist Church. With the lights dimmed, they danced and waved glow sticks, singing praises during the closing worship of the church’s conference for young girls, A Girl Thing for Christ.

The second-annual event, put on by the women’s ministry, focused on a theme taken from Romans 12:1-2, teaching that everyone is different by design and that they belong to God.

“Our girls are trying to live by the world’s standards instead of God’s, and we believe that as Christians, it’s our job to let them know how much God loves them and for them to learn to love Him back and to recognize that because they belong to Him, they should be doing what He wants them to do, not to succumb to the peer pressure of the world and to realize that God can help them through everything,” said Patricia Askew, women’s ministry chair.

In addition to the message of the day, the girls also attended age-related workshops dealing with the issues of spiritual awareness, peer pressure and sex and sexuality.

“We, as mature women of God, are being obedient to the word of God that says to teach those who are coming behind us,” said Askew.
