Statewide school scores have been released by the Florida Department of Education, and Flagler County received high marks.

Even with higher standards this year by the state, 100% of Flagler’s traditional public schools earned either an A or B letter grade in comparison to the state which only had 69% of its schools earning an A or B.

Fifty-six percent of Flagler elementary, middle and charter schools earned an A in comparison to the state which only had 43% of its schools score in this category; 33% of Flagler elementary, middle and charters earned a B, which is also higher than the state’s percentage of 26%.

School grades for high schools have not yet been released. Concerning Palm Harbor's F, policy dictates that F schools must receive additional support and monitoring from the state office of Differentiated Accountability as well as district curriculum staff.

Teachers union responds

The Florida Education Association sent out a statement yesterday to dispute the validity of the state’s grading system. Florida Education Association President Andy Ford said that while the teachers union supports accountability measures, too much weight is given to the FCAT. Moreover, the state has changed its methods for evaluating schools so often that it’s impossible to compare school grades from one year to the next.

“FEA joins parents, teachers, administrators and school board members in support of a fair, accurate, trustworthy and reliable accountability system,” Ford said. “The state’s political leadership should bring all these parties together to formulate a system that everyone values and trusts.”
