An argument Sunday night at Ralph Carter Park escalated with shots being fired and an 18-year-old Bunnell man being arrested, according to the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office.

No one was injured in the incident.

Flagler County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the park on Rymfire Drive around 6:42 p.m. after receiving a call that guns were being fired inside the park.

Witnesses told deputies that two groups of individuals were arguing when someone in a vehicle began shooting at the crowd. Deputies located the suspect vehicle traveling east on Royal Palms Parkway near the intersection with Belle Terre Parkway. Seven males were detained.

Deputies found a .32-caliber firearm located on the driver side rear floor board wrapped in a white T-shirt.

Occupants of the vehicle told deputies that Johnnie Thomas Jr., of Hymon Circle in Bunnell, had fired shots at a group of people after a fight.

Deputies recovered six shell casings at the park. The recovered gun was reported stolen out of Volusia County in May 1997, according to the reports.

Thomas is charged with discharging a firearm from a vehicle, discharging a firearm in public, shooting or throwing a deadly missile and dealing in stolen property.

He was being held in the Flagler County Inmate facility Monday morning in lieu of $65,000 bond.

“This was a reckless act that showed total disregard for the lives that were at risk,” Sheriff Donald Fleming said Monday in a statement. “Our investigation will continue to see if we can find out how this teenager obtained this firearm.”
