+ Unemployment down 0.9%, still highest in Florida
Flagler County’s unemployment rate is at 12.7%, according to numbers released March 30, by the Center for Business Excellence. That’s down nearly a point from last month’s report, but still ranks as the highest of any county in the state.

For the year, nonagricultural jobs in Palm Coast were 19,100 in February 2012, an increase of 1,400 since last December.

Statewide, employment increased by 1.1% since February last year. State unemployment is 9.7%.

There are 17 Florida counties with double-digit unemployment rates in February, down from 23 in January.

After Flagler County, the areas with the highest unemployment are Hernando (12.1%), Hendry (11.7%), St. Lucie (11.4%) and Dixie and Putnam (both 11.2%).

+ F-section man jailed after fleeing scene
Flagler County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested Barry Gallagher, 43, Sunday after he violated a court injunction by attempting to contact his estranged wife and then attempting to avoid arrest by fleeing from deputies, according to a press release.

The incident took place around 1:30 p.m. Sunday, at the intersection of Old Kings Road and Felshire Lane.

+ Wet roadway leads to S.R. 100 crash
A slick roadway caused a Palm Coast driver to lose control of his vehicle and crash into another Palm Coast vehicle, injuring three March 31, on State Road 100, near Import Auto.

Nathaniel Columbie, 22, was driving his 2006 Ford Mustang eastbound on State Road 100, according to a Florida Highway Patrol report. Jessica Laliberte, 21, of Palatka, was his passenger. Both were wearing seatbelts.

When Columbie accelerated, he lost control of the car, sliding and rotating through the center grass median before entering the westbound traffic lanes. As a result, the Mustang T-boned a 1990 Chevy 1500 pickup truck driven by Preston Hagens, 18, of Palm Coast. Hagens also was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash.

Columbie sustained critical injuries. He and Laliberte, who sustained serious injuries, were transported to Halifax Hospital.

Hagens sustained serious injuries and was transported to Florida Hospital Flagler.
