+ Flagler Schools rank among best in Florida in algebra
Flagler students ranked third in the state, in the highest-scoring top-third percentile for the Algebra I End-of-Course Assessments.

School Board Vice-Chair Andy Dance, wrote in an email: “This is the kind of great news we should be singing about from the rooftops!”

Flagler also scored among the leaders in the lowest-scoring bottom third percentile, with an average score of 17. That means that 17% of Flagler students scored in this bottom score bracket (scores of 20 to 40), a statewide low.

Students received the test via computer as an introduction to computer-based testing in the county. According to school officials, virtual testing means quicker grade turnaround in the future.

Results are being reported on a special scale known as a T-score scale of 20 to 80. Flagler turned in a mean score of 56, ranking among the top three districts in the state.

“The results really show that the teachers taught the standards that were being taught on the test,” said Jim Devine, testing coordinator. “And the students really rose to the occasion.”

+ Eighth-graders awarded for good citizenship from SAR
The Flagler Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution annually awards a medal and certificate for good citizenship to area students who have completed the eighth grade and will be entering high school in the fall.

The students, who have been nominated by their teachers and the school’s administration, have attained noteworthy achievement in their schools, community and state.

This year’s SAR awards were presented to Denis Dineen and Melanie Vacchiano, Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic School; Lukas Stocker and Elizabeth Monroe, Buddy Taylor Middle School; Christopher Tole-Williams and Diana Solokhina, Imagine Charter School at Town Center; and Nikol Fedopova and Joshua Walker, Indian Trails Middle School.

+ Imagine at Town Center receives character award
Imagine School at Town Center recently received a 2011 National Promising Practices Award for Learning with a Purpose, a character development initiative on the campus. About 500 applicants submitted practices for recognition.

The awards recognize strategies used on campuses to help students become better citizens, friends and leaders.

“It is refreshing to be recognized for our emphasis and dedication to teaching to the whole child, rather than just preparing them to take standardized tests, said Lisa O’Grady, principal. “Character development is an essential piece of that daily puzzle within the four walls of our school. It will benefit them throughout their life’s journey.”

Imagine has 520 students in kindergarten to eighth grade.
