Three Palm Coast residents attempted to prevent the Department of Children and Families from interviewing a child about a possible abuse situation, according to a report from deputies at the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office.

The report states that Sara Merryday, an investigator from DCF, arrived at 58 Belvedere Lane in Palm Coast on May 31, to conduct an interview with the child, after an anonymous call to DCF gave her reason to believe the child might be suffering abuse.

She told deputies that she had previous difficulties with the family, as well. Deputies arrived on the scene for support as she knocked on the door the afternoon of May 31.

No one answered, although figures were observed in the house. Merryday and the deputy contacted Narine Smith, the child’s mother, on the phone, and she was not cooperative, according to the deputy’s report.

Later, the deputies received multiple calls from neighbors, who said an elderly man was leading a young boy down the street. Deputies reported that the boy was wearing a T-shirt and underwear, but no pants, and was scratched up as a result of sneaking through the woods away from deputies.

The boy was treated for injuries. The elderly man was the boy's grandfather, Grigoriy Saakyan. He was arrested, as were Smith and grandmother Yegiyeva Svetlana. Their charges were the same: “remove child from state.” They were booked at the Flagler County Inmate Facility.
