The pretty and the prickly are subjects for local artist Terry Sumpter, who will be the featured artist in June at the Gallery of Local Art in Flagler Beach. Sumpter, a Palm Coast resident, uses his art to increase awareness of social problems.

“I am not content with painting life’s pretty subjects but also enjoy trying to bring awareness or pricking consciences to the not-so-pretty facts of our modern day life,” Sumpter said. “Homelessness, addictions, abuses and war torn areas have all had representations in my portfolio.”

Sumpter, who began painting three years ago, donates many of his works to charity for auction, in addition to donating a piece every year on Memorial Day.

He has won several awards at GOLA, including an honorable mention in this year’s Flagler Beach Plein Aire Paint Out.

An opening reception for Sumpter will be held 6-8 p.m. Friday, June 3, at GOLA, 208 S. Central Ave., Flagler Beach.

FIRST FRIDAY
The U.S. Navy TGIF Band will appear at Flagler Beach’s First Friday 6-9 p.m. Friday, June 3, at Veterans Park.

There will be two separate activities on an entire block of South Central Street. Sailors of all ages can show their skills in the fourth-annual Rain Gutter Regatta Boat Race.

Free boat kits, information and contest rules are available at www.cityof flaglerbeach.com.

For those who prefer land-based fun with an artistic slant, there will be a free sidewalk/street art display where anyone can use city-provided chalk to create their most imaginative drawings right on a reserved piece of Flagler Beach pavement.
