When the clock strikes midnight, Clara begins to shrink, and the toys around her come to life, in “The Nutcracker” ballet, the story of a young German girl who dreams of a nutcracker prince and a fierce battle against a mouse king.

The ballet will be performed 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 9, at the Flagler Auditorium, by national ballet company Dance Alive.

About 50 Flagler County dancers will take the stage with the professional dancers, taking the roles of the mice, toy solders, party children and Clara’s friends.

“It’s a really exciting event for them,” said Cindy Miller, of Flagler School of Dance. “Dance Alive is a national ballet company, and they are dancing right on the stage with them; it’s really inspiring.”

Dance Alive, which has a long time relationship with Flagler Auditorium, travels to several cities in Florida performing the iconic story of the Nutcracker.

“I think local people want to see their local children performing,” said Kim Tuttle, artistic director, Dance Alive National Ballet. “I think most places we go, most places in Florida, don’t have a professional ballet company. They don’t have the men or the higher level dancing.”

Adding local children to the cast brings more audience participation, she added.

“I think we’re really fortunate to have this opportunity here in Flagler County,” Miller said. “The memories of it stick with you.”
