Monday afternoon thunderstorms sent firefighters scrambling to control what was a small brush fire that

quickly grew into a 100 acre wildfire threatening structures in southern Flagler County near Durrance Lane.
Flagler County Fire Rescue, Volusia County and units from Palm Coast, Flagler Beach and Bunnell coordinated efforts to bring the fire under control around 5 p.m. Monday. Flagler County’s FireFlight Helicopter and the Division of Forestry were also on the scene.

Flagler County Fire Rescue Chief Don Petito said wind from the thunderstorms Monday afternoon pushed what was a 35-acre brush fire started Sunday afternoon by lightning strike, to a wildfire moving north into Flagler County from Durrance Lane. The fire threatened to destroy a riding stable in the area and at one point was headed for homes in Volusia County. No structures were damaged by the fire..

Although Sunday’s thunderstorms brought welcome relief from the heat, lightning associated with the thunderstorms spawned a rash of five new fires. Most of them were small and quickly contained, but two near Durrance Lane were estimated at 35 acres.

“It just shows you that we are not yet over the drought,” Petito said. “Hopefully we will get significant rainfall in the next few months to eliminate the threat of wildfires.”

While crews were working on the fire near Durrance Lane, a new fire in Flagler County’s northwest corner was spotted by FireFlight. Petito said the fire was less than 3 acres and quickly contained.
