Matanzas’ boys tennis team, which reached the Class 3A state semifinals, was named the Volusia-Flagler Boys Team of the Year at the Daytona Beach News-Journal’s Volusia-Flagler High School Awards Show on May 21.
Flagler Palm Coast and Seabreeze each won six Player of the Year awards.
FPC’s Players of the Year were Marion Clayton (baseball), Karina Marcelus (girls track and field), Douglas Seth (boys cross country), Sofia Stiwich (girls golf), Alexa Calidonio (girls wrestling) and Kevin McLean (boys wrestling). FPC’s Jordan Haymon was named Power Play Athlete of the Year.
Seabreeze’s Players of the Year were Olivia Chase (girls soccer), Luke Harrell (boys soccer), Reef McKeeking (boys swimming), Dalton Boice (boys bowling), Marissa Watson (Girls Special Olympian of the Year) and Anthony Nagel (Boys Special Olympican of the Year). Sabreeze’s Jacob McBroom was named Unified Partner Champion of the Year.
Matanzas had three Players of the Year: Olivia Rabbat (girls bowling), Peyton Cerasi (girls cross country) and Daniel Patsula (boys tennis).
Mainland’s Dennis King III was named Defensive Football Player of the Year.
Five runners from the Imagine School At Town Center cross county and track club, coached by Michael Pane, competed in the Florida Youth Running Association Middle School State Track Championship on May 15 at IMG Academy in Bradenton.
Aspen Lester was the only fifth grader who qualfied and ran in the middle school 3,000-meter race and placed 43rd. She also ran in the girls elementary division 1,500-meter race and placed fourth with a personal record 5:09.31.
Mia Kopcikova ran a personal record 10:56.23 in the 3,000 meters to place 11th in the girls race. She also set a PR in the 1,500 with a 5:09.31 to finish 20th. Avery Wisniewski placed 44th in the 3,000 (12:20.23) and 36th in the 1,500 (5:18.08). Madelyn Yorgey was 42nd in the 3,00 (12:11.28). And Aidan Moylan was 71st in the boys 3,000 meters with a time of 10:39.54.
Flagler Palm Coast graduation senior Jordan Haymon, running with Florida Elite Athletes, was part of the winning New Balance Showcase 4x400 relay at the Southest Meet of Champions last weekend at the University of North Florida. Haymon’s squad finished in 3:08.31, the fastest time in the nation this year.
First Baptist Christian Academy has named Matthew Musgrove its new head boys basketball coach. Musgrove has over 20 years experience in coaching and player development. Ethan Buchanan who coached at Matanzas in 2024-25 and was FBCA’s assistant girls basketball coach last season, has been named the girls team’s head coach.
