Efforts to clean up and secure the Makai Beach Resort property in Ormond Beach are underway.
The City of Ormond Beach shared an update about the blighted property on its Facebook page on Monday, June 8. The resort, located at 707 S. Atlantic Ave., has been closed since sustaining significant damage during Hurricane Milton in 2024. On May 8, the property experienced an electrical fire, believed to have been caused by someone trying to steal copper wire.
"This property has sat vacant and deteriorating for years, and after the May 8 fire it became a clear safety concern for the surrounding area," the city wrote on its Facebook post. "Since then, the city has kept steady pressure on the current owners (they only took over the property a few months ago) to clean it up and secure it, and some of that work is now underway."
The city reported that the owners have removed graffiti and trash, as well as cut back vegetation and cleared remaining storm debris. The resort will also soon be fenced off for security purposes; since its closure, there have been issues with squatters and people looking to explore abandoned properties, as its blighted condition has circulated through social media, including TikTok.
"There is still work left to do, and we are committed to keeping up with the owners as they move forward with deciding on a plan to demolish or renovate," the city wrote.
The resort is currently listed for sale at $10 million.
