Salty Church Lead Pastor Robbie O’Brien challenged the members to embark on a 30-day challenge utilizing the Lord’s Prayer.
“There is no substitute for your direct connection with God. You can’t farm it out. You can’t hire somebody else to do it or phone it in, right? You need to connect," O’Brien said.
He began the prayer with the entire church: “Our father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread, and forgive us for our debts, as we have also forgiven our debtors.”
O’Brien began to reiterate the importance of forgiveness: “If you forgive others, then your Heavenly Father will forgive you, but if you don’t, he won’t.”
He said it's not necessary for the greater good to immediately forget someone’s wrongdoings.
Then, the concept of forgiveness was broken up into two parts and displayed on the large TV screen for the congregation to view.
Part one states, “Forgiving someone else does not require you to trust them.” Furthermore, part two states, “It is releasing the debt they owe.”
In terms of baptism, this act can symbolically represent the releasing of one’s debt, and then emerging from the water “clean.”
Toward the end of the service, O’Brien told his church members that bowls of ocean water were meticulously placed throughout the church.
He urged his members to utilize the water as a reminder that each individual is forgiven and cleansed through each baptism. O’Brien said that individuals could simply dip their fingers in the water, or perhaps, make the outline of a cross atop their foreheads.
“The water is a reminder, a tool. Some of you need that,” O’Brien said.
Prior to the conclusion of the service, O’Brien asked some reflection questions: When are you eager or reluctant to accept God’s gift of forgiveness? When are you eager or reluctant to give the gift of forgiveness?
Salty Church is located at 221 Vining Court, Ormond Beach. The church services take place at 5:30 p.m. Saturdays, and 9 a.m., 10:30 a.m. and noon on Sundays.
