Matanzas defeated No. 1 seed Orlando Innovation 4-3 on Wednesday, April 29, in the quarterfinals of the Class 3A boys state tennis championships at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs.

The Pirates, who are 18-0 in dual matches this year, will meet Wiregrass Ranch of Wesley Chapel in a semifinal match Thursday at 8:30 a.m. If the Pirates win, they will play in the final an hour and a half after the last match for an opportunity to win their first state tennis championship in school history.

Both Matanzas and Wiregrass Ranch are unseeded in the eight-team field. Wiregrass Ranch defeated No. 4 seed St. Thomas Aquinas of Fort Lauderdale 5-1 on Wednesday.

No. 1 Daniel Patsula and No. 3 Stanislav Valenteychik won their singles matches against Innovation. They both remain undefeated on the season in singles. The Pirates won both doubles matches to secure the victory. Patsula and Owen Brady won at No. 1 doubles and Valenteychik and Adam Stochel Polubiec won at No. 2 doubles.

Matanzas will have one change on Thursday. No. 5 singles player Alexander Engblom has an AICE exam at school and will miss the match. Tyler Lemmon will take his place, Matanzas coach Jens Oliva said.
