The Flagler County School Board voted 4-0 at its April 28 meeting to reject an offer to purchase a portion of the school district’s property at 1 Corporate Drive in Palm Coast.

The board, however, agreed to evaluate its land holdings during a future workshop, and see if any parcels would be at peak value and would not provide an educational purpose.

Board Chair Christy Chong said she would like to look into selling the entire property “to see what offers we can get.”

Ryan Companies sent the letter of interest to discuss a purchase of a 4-acre portion of the 7.11-acre property for a proposed purchase price of $1.9 million. The district received two appraisals for the entire property of about $6 million and about $4.5 million.

Will Furry said the board should only sell the property if it has a reason to do so. One possibility board members brought up would be to use the funds to build a new pool for student use. By statute, any funds from such a sale would have to be used for capital projects. A pool would meet that requirement.

Janie Ruddy said she would like to explore the possibility of building workforce housing for district employees who are at the bottom of the pay scale.

Furry said the board could also look into reserving a parcel that’s too small currently for a new school but might serve a specific educational purpose in the future.
