The City of Flagler Beach has promoted Deputy Chief Lance Blanchette to serve as the city’s next police chief following a nationwide search to fill the role.

City Manager Dale Martin announced the appointment after a selection process that drew nearly 30 applicants. Four candidates were ultimately interviewed before Blanchette was chosen for the position.

Blanchette has served as deputy chief since 2018 and brings nearly 25 years of prior experience with the Daytona Beach Police Department. He steps into the role following the retirement of former Police Chief Matthew Doughney earlier this year.

“It’s an honor that this community has put their faith and trust in me,” Blanchette said, adding that he is excited to lead the department into its next chapter.

An interview panel made up of senior law enforcement officials from across Florida unanimously recommended Blanchette for the position after evaluating candidates on leadership, qualifications and vision for the department.

Blanchette said his path into law enforcement began during his time in the United States Coast Guard, where he worked in search and rescue and law enforcement roles.

“That’s where I got the bug,” he said.

Following his military service, he joined the Daytona Beach Police Department, where he spent 24 years. Blanchette said working in a larger agency helped shape his leadership approach.

“It forced me to become a leader very fast,” he said.

Now leading a smaller department, Blanchette said his focus will be on accessibility and community connection.

“In a smaller agency, you have to be more in tune with and accessible to your community,” he said.

Martin said Blanchette’s leadership will be key as the city prepares for future growth and increased activity, particularly with the ongoing reconstruction of the Flagler Beach Pier.

“Chief Blanchette will have the opportunity to implement programs and projects to enhance the wonderful quality of life and safety, especially pedestrian safety, in our community,” Martin said.

Blanchette pointed to pedestrian safety and increased visitor traffic as key public safety concerns, noting the city’s steady flow of tourists and day visitors.

“We have people crossing A1A all the time, day and night,” he said. “We just want people to follow the rules of the road to keep everybody safe.”

The Flagler Beach Police Department includes 15 sworn officers, along with administrative staff and victim advocates.

Blanchette said he wants residents to view him as an approachable leader.

“I want the community to know that I am their chief. I work for them,” he said.

Blanchette is expected to begin his tenure by working to fill the now vacant deputy chief position.
