With the score tied 7-7 midway through the second quarter, Flagler Palm Coast had Spruce Creek in a third-down-and-15-yards situation with a Bulldogs linebacker bearing down on Hawks quarterback P.J. Miller.
But Miller eluded the defender and ran 15 yards to the FPC 2-yard line, setting up a touchdown run by Keenan Nephew. On the ensuing drive, Bulldogs quarterback La'Darius Simmons was tackled on a keeper and his helmet came off, forcing him to leave the game for one play. His replacement fumbled at the FPC 22-yard line, and on first down, the Hawks scored again.
Spruce Creek, the fourth-ranked team in Class 7A, went on to defeat FPC 35-13 on Friday, Oct. 24, as Hawks coach Andy Price won his 200th career game on Creek’s Senior Night. But the turning point came in that first-half sequence with a 7-7 tie turning into a 20-7 halftime lead for the Hawks.
Miller rushed for 117 yards as the Hawks (7-1) amassed 312 yards on the ground. The Bulldogs rushed for 194 yards with Simmons running for 115 yards including a 41-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. The senior also tossed an 11-yard touchdown pass to Nolan Caliendo early in the second quarter to tie the score after Spruce Creek drove 99 yards for a touchdown on its first possession.
“I felt like we ran the ball really well,” FPC coach Patrick Turner said. “The passing game struggled, but that was due to them applying pressure. They have a really good defensive line. We had opportunities, but we just couldn’t capitalize on them.”
The Bulldogs fell to 3-6, but because they've had one of the strongest schedules in Class 7A that included the Hawks as well as DeLand — the third-ranked team in the state — they were ranked 10th in the region with eight teams going to the playoffs.
“If we beat Fleming Island, maybe it will boost us a little bit,” Turner said. “We’ll see.”
The Bulldogs host Fleming Island (5-3) in their final game of the season on Friday, Oct. 31, which will be Senior Night for FPC’s football players, cheerleaders, band, color guard and JRTOC.
