Matanzas’ Rilee Whitmore and Seabreeze’s Sofia James had to settle for the second- and third-place podium steps at the District 6-2A girls weightlifting championships on Jan. 25 at Matanzas High. They could end the state championships in the same spots.
Whitmore and James were competing against New Smyrna Beach’s Mopeola Tofade, who won the district’s 169-pound traditional title with a total of 375 pounds in the clean and jerk and bench press. Whitmore was second with 350 pounds and James was third with 340. Tofade and Whitmore have the top totals in Class 2A while James is fourth heading into this week’s regional championships.
Whitmore, who broke four Matanzas school records at the district meet, also finished second to Tofade in Olympic competition (snatch and clean and jerk) with a 310-pound total to Tofade’s 315. James was third with 305 pounds. Those are also among the top totals in the state.
Matanzas swept the district team titles and will be sending 10 lifters to the regional. The Pirates won the traditional championship for the third year in a row, defeating New Smyrna Beach 67-58 with Seabreeze finishing third with 27 points. Matanzas also won the title in Olympic competition, defeating second-place New Smyrna 75-59.
Ryann Parkinson (101-pound class), Madison Glisson (119) and Sarah Sanchez (154) won two titles each for Matanzas. Whitmore, Eva Ossler (183), Alicia Naticchione (199) and Samantha Simon (unlimited) also advanced to regional in both competitions, while Aryanna DiFatta (110) and Sammy Cabrera (154) advanced in traditional competition and Zaliyah King (154) advanced in Olympic.
Five Seabreeze lifters qualified for regional: Camila Arellano (129) and James in both competitions and Rylie Deiter (110), Charlotte Low (154) and Olivia Consolatore (183) in traditional.
Mainland’s Nila Cepeda (unlimited) qualified in traditional competition.
Flagler Palm Coast will send 11 weightlifters to the Region 1-3A championships, which it will host on Feb. 1. The Bulldogs were runners-up to Spruce Creek in both competitions at the District 4-3A meet Jan. 25 at FPC.
FPC’s Madeline Brinker (101), Nya Williams (110) and Chloe Long (183) won district titles in both competitions, while Sherlande Paul (154) placed second in traditional with a 305 total and won the Olympic title. Paul went 9 for 9 on her lifts.
The Bulldogs will have eight lifters competing in both competitions at regional: Brinker, Williams, Long, Paul, Angelis Rosa (101), Tessa Cauley-Bennett (110), Lillian Aimes (129), Nereyda Campos (129) and Zoey Gotera (unlimited), who finished second in both competitions. Ashlyn Hardy (199) qualified in traditional and Kelsey Coyne (169) qualified in Olympic.
