School-based hurricane shelters in Volusia County have closed, and Volusia County Schools are expected to reopen for students on Wednesday, Oct. 5.

Evacuees who had been staying at school shelters have been transported to the Ocean Center, Volusia County Schools Communications Director Angel Gomez said in a virtual press conference on Saturday, Oct. 1.

"We understand that everyone is anxious at this time to return to normal operations," Gomez said, reading a statement from Superintendent Carmen Balgobin. "We want you to know that we continue to work diligently to prepare our schools to reopen safely for students and staff. We are presently conducting comprehensive walkthroughs of all our campuses to determine damages and readiness to open."

A handful of schools, he added, have standing water or debris; 11- and 12-month school administrators will return to work on Monday, Oct. 3.

"I urge you to continue checking in all of your communication platforms on our webpage ... and to check Twitter and Facebook and Instagram for any other further updates," Gomez said.

Volusia County School Board Chairman Ruben Colon urged school district employees who are struggling to contact their supervisors.

"I happen to know of a few families that are really struggling right now," he said. "Let us know what's going on. Reach out to us and let us know how we can help you. ... Thank you to everyone, and we're going to get through this."
