New arrangements with the East Flagler Mosquito Control District bring year-round monitoring to the communities of Espanola and Rima Ridge, enhancing the services provided to the residents that live there.

“New traps were installed in those two communities at the beginning of the month,” said Emergency Management Director Jonathan Lord, who serves as the county’s liaison with the district since the Summer of 2021. “Monitoring these traps provides data that will allow Mosquito Control to more proactively control mosquito populations for the comfort of our residents.”

Technologically advanced cameras utilize artificial intelligence to count the mosquitos collected by the traps. This information is recorded in real time 24 hours a day so that district personnel can spot increases in mosquito populations for a faster response.

While both communities are technically outside the boundary of the East Flagler Mosquito Control District, a memorandum of understanding signed in December 2021 allowed for enhanced services to these areas.

“This new arrangement allows us to better control the mosquito populations in Flagler County,” said East Flagler Mosquito Control District Manager Mark Positano. “We take pride in providing great service to our residents.

Residents countywide can contact the district, www.flaglermosquito.com or 386-437-0002, to report mosquito problems or concerns.

“This is true even if you do not live within the East Flagler Mosquito Control District’s boundaries,” Lord said. “However, please be aware that the services available will vary depending on where in the County you live and the taxing district of your home.”
