It’s time to get to know your candidates.

Citizens for Ormond Beach will hold a candidate forum on Wednesday, July 13, at the Ormond Beach Senior Center, located at 351 Andrews St. This forum will feature candidates running for two races that will be included in the Aug. 23 primary elections: The Zone 1 Ormond Beach City Commission race, and the Volusia County Council District 4 race.

The event will begin with a meet and greet from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., to be followed by the forum from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

“CFOB’s goal is to provide an opportunity to meet candidates in person and educate the citizens on the positions of the different candidates,” stated an announcement by the civic group.

The candidates for the Ormond Beach City Commission Zone 1 race are Tim Grigsby, a project manager with an engineering firm; Joseph Valerio, a spacecraft systems engineer, and Lori Tolland, a registered nurse and member of the city’s Planning Board.

Voters have four choices when it comes to their next representative for District 4 on the Volusia County Council.

The candidates running are Troy Kent, incumbent Zone 2 City Commissioner and assistant principal; Rob Littleton, incumbent Zone 4 City Commissioner and owner of a tutoring agency; Ken Smith, Wall-Y-World Gallery owner; and Michael McLean, former Seminole County Commissioner and owner of a governmental and business consulting firm.

City modifies water disinfectant

The city of Ormond Beach is performing an annual change of disinfectant for its potable water system, an action that will temporarily alter the smell and taste of water.

According to the city, this temporary disinfection of the water distribution system began on July 4 and will run through July 25. The city is using a stronger disinfectant of free chlorine, instead of the regular chloramines, which is a longer-lasting disinfectant made up of chlorine-ammonia.

“This temporary disinfectant conversion, in conjunction with a coordinated flushing exercise, is a common practice for enhancing the effectiveness and reliability of disinfection in water distribution systems and is recommended by the Department of Environmental Protection,” the city wrote in an announcement. “The normal use of the chloramines disinfectant will resume upon completion of the conversion period.”

The water continues to be safe to drink.
